Museum für Gestaltung Zürich

The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is the leading Swiss museum for design and visual communication. Since its foundation in 1875, the museum has included what has taken effect as design. Its internationally acclaimed collection comprises over half a million objects from the history of design. The museum reaches a broad national and international audience, at its two sites in Zurich and through its touring exhibitions. As part of Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is actively involved in research and teaching and produces its own publications on a regular basis.

Collection Highlights

When Max Bill’s Ulm Stool meets Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse (1498) and Adrian Frutiger’s Univers font encounters a Balenciaga cocktail dress, when Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s puppets dance around a SBB Railways Clock, or one of Emile Gallé’s art deco vases finds a companion in one of El Lissitzky’s lithographs, then the Museum für Gestaltung is presenting some of its many treasures for the first time in a permanent exhibition.

Ideal Living

-
That’s how we ought to have lived! In the 20th century, Swiss designers and producers had clear ideas about perfect furnishing. Seven sample rooms, furnished with highlights from the collection, present the most important trends in Swiss furniture design of the modern age and trace changing lifestyles. Advertising brochures and historical photographs complete this exciting journey through time.

Poster Stories

-
Large-scale design history: From its beginnings over 100 years ago to the present day, the pictorial poster has achieved impressive stylistic diversity. Icons line up alongside rediscoveries, from early painterly and narrative posters through pure typeface posters, which rely solely on expressive lettering, to artistic experiments with photography and recent designs using digital techniques.
