Muséum d'histoire naturelle
Initiated by Louis Agassiz and Louis Coulon, the museum was founded in 1835 in the current public library (Bibliothèque publique et universitaire). It is installed since 1978 in the former Ecole de commerce, built out of the local Hauterivian limestone ; architect Hans Rychner, 1853). Dioramas presenting a complete collection of birds and mammals living in Switzerland. Some reptiles and mammals in vivariums in the forum. Opening in 2010 of a new entomology room and a space for pedagogical activities. Geology room in preparation. An elaborate temporary exhibition is created each year, showcasing the museum’s rich scientific collections (over 1000 types conserved): geology, palaeontology, entomology, malacology, exotic fauna, amber, meteorites. The creation of the temporary exhibitions closely associates scientists with artists working in visual arts, theatre or film. The Museum also collaborates with the University of Neuchâtel and with the Swiss Biological Records Center (CSCF).
