Forteresse historique de St-Maurice

The Historic Fortress of Saint-Maurice comprises three forts - Cindey, Scex (VS) and Dailly (VD) built between the First and Second World Wars. These fortifications, of European strategic importance, offer the public a superb summary of almost 500 years of the evolution of fortification, culminating, with these historic forts, in the apogee of fortification in Switzerland. These military structures sometimes allowed several hundred men to live for up to three months in total autonomy. The visit allows visitors to discover the armament (7.5 cm and 10.5 cm cannons, 15 cm turret cannon, etc.), the living quarters of the garrison, the ammunition magazine as well as the history, sometimes tragic (the explosion of an ammunition magazine in 1946 caused the death of ten people).
