The Swiss Museums Association is the umbrella organisation of museums. The association works in collaboration with regional museum networks and thematic and professional associations in the field of museums. It is a member of Cultura, the umbrella association of Swiss cultural institutions.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is the largest international network of museum professionals. ICOM Switzerland works together with various ICOM National Committees. The Swiss Museums Association, for its part, collaborates with its French-speaking, German-speaking and European counterparts.

The European Museum Forum awards the «European Museum of the Year Award». It is also commissioned with the pre-selection of the Council of Europe prize. It has already honoured 33 Swiss museums since its founding in 1977. The criteria of the jury are based on the visit experience, the forms of mediation and the quality of reception.

The Swiss Museums Association participated in the European project «Intangible Cultural Heritage and Museums Project» (IMP). For three years, the IMP addressed issues related to successful cooperation between museums and practitioners of living traditions, taking into account the opportunities and risks on both sides.
